They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard. The mysterious aerolite seems to melt into the earth, infecting both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly color. To their horror, the Gardner family discover that this alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it cluding them.

Now wait for new listeners to come up after the movie based on this comes out. H. P. Lovecraft is fcuking legend. This has a similar concept to one of Kaya Scodelarios early movies where she was hired to be a nanny for a baby that turned out to be a doll. Color out of space audiobook. Yeah, one word: STUPID 😂😂. If you're looking to satisfy your disturbing creatures or people craving, this wont do it. The creatures or mutated people/animals just don't hit the spot. Perhaps due to low budget. They are gross, but not at the horrifying level. Better wow factor from The Void and both the Thing movies. Been trying to find a movie with real disturbing creatures since watching Thing and The Void. Something along the lines of DeadSpace creatures. This just didn't do it for me.
The flow of the story didn't capture me either. It was over-shadowed by bad acting. Or acting that didn't make sense or go along with the scene/mood. It was almost like they were playing people who were acting, if that makes sense. Nicholas Cage's acting just wasn't good and way too over dramatic to looney. Especially his "political" change in character when he would act out in rage.
The CGI and rushing of story just kind of made this movie seem like it was made in a day. Like everyone involved just did it for fun with no real expectation of the outcome.
Perhaps with more budget, the movie could have been longer and made with a more in depth story. If you liked the movie Annihilation (2018) this might entertain you. If you didn't care for Annihilation, like myself, you won't find this much better. Both tried too hard to be "intellectual" or "cosmic horror of the unknown.
Overall the movie was a descent time waster. I'd suggest to watch it for rent or when it becomes free.

Yes, the monstrosity is somewhat ineffable, but its effects are not -- victims suffer in body and mind, changing and watching themselves and their loved ones change, helpless to stop the decay of body and brain. Even the natural world, the farm and animals that the family labored so hard to cultivate are completely poisoned and destroyed, through no fault of their own. It's just chance. Absolute must read for every fan of Lovecraft or everyone who wants to become a fan of his. Classic creeper!.. What the actual fuck, Lovecraft. Never sleeping with the lights off again. I'm not a huge horror buff. I scare easily and the fear stays with me for a long time. I've decided to start reading though some Lovecraft because I want to be able to say I've read Lovecraft. As I was checking out at Barnes & Noble, the cashier told me I was in for a treat. Yeah. Right. This creepy story about a meteorite and the creature that came along with it is slowly terrifying in a Heart of Darkness way. The lack What the actual fuck, Lovecraft. The lack of description of the "monster" itself (or the remains of its victims) is what scared me the most, leaving my brain to imagine all sorts of twisted horrors. I definitely suggest this book to fans of horror, but also to anyone who is interested in the foundations of modern science fiction and horror. But really, I will not sleep tonight... It’s been a while since I read any Lovecraft so I’d forgotten just how… crap he is! Lovecraft’s problem is his poor writing ability. He can come up with some great stories and ideas, he clearly had a ton of nightmarishly unique imagery, but he really struggles to convey them to the reader. Like The Colour Out of Space, which tells of a meteorite hitting a farm and the mysterious colourfully glowing rock slowly poisoning the farmer and his family. It’s a great setup but Lovecraft ineptly tries to It’s been a while since I read any Lovecraft so I’d forgotten just how… crap he is! Lovecraft’s problem is his poor writing ability. It’s a great setup but Lovecraft ineptly tries to make the cause of the illnesses a mystery when you know it’s the alien meteorite. Things start falling apart and continue in that vein for the rest of the story with little variation. There’s no suspense but he drags out the story to a unnecessary length anyway and it’s beyond tedious to read. The Outsider takes a similar approach where a monster rises up from his dungeon castle to visit the outside world and is surprised to see he looks different to the humans who run from him screaming. That scene when he looks in the mirror at the end and realises he’s a monster is the “twist ending” even though the reader’s figured it out long beforehand. The Hound is a dull story of a demon dog’s revenge on a pair of grave-robbers who stole a magical amulet. A great idea but so poorly handled that it fails to live up to it’s potential. Lovecraft’s style is to write lavish monologues rather than a narrative so it feels like you’re reading a sequence of descriptions of elaborate and complex images rather than an actual story with a plot, characters, etc. And if you write horror, it’s best to try and have some immediacy with the threat - having characters meet another character who relates a story from 50 years ago, and whose “terrors” were also static and distant, completely nullifies any scares. And while he doesn’t describe the monsters, leaving that up to the reader, which can be effective if written with skill, it’s not really potent in the way he uses it here. Simply writing “oh the horror was unimaginable! ” isn’t scary, it’s stupid. At least Lovecraft knew his weaknesses and stayed away from writing dialogue for the most part - which doesn’t make it easier to read - but he does attempt dialogue in The Colour Out of Space and it’s laughable. It’s a page-length monologue where a character stutters out a few words followed by ellipses, over and over again: “the terror… it’s so terrible… durnit, the terror… unimaginable!!... ” etc. - nobody talks like this!! (Horror trivia: in On Writing, Stephen King says his inspiration for The Tommyknockers was The Colour Out of Space. Also in On Writing, I think the dialogue he uses to illustrate how not to write speech was taken from this story too. ) Lovecraft’s stories may be horribly written and be a chore to read but he is remembered for a reason as his stories contain some great imagery and he did influence a number of succeeding great horror writers. If you want a taste of what Lovecraft’s like to see if you’ll like or dislike his work, this three story collection provides a good idea of what to expect from him... A longer short story from Lovecraft this time and quite possibly the best I've read (actually it is the best I've read, but I've only read two others). A meteor crashes down to earth on some farmstead and thus proceeds to infect all around it with its out-of-this-world eerie qualities. This was written at a time when science wasn't quite there for the fiction. This is early sci-fi dressed up as gothic horror. The mix of attempted sci-fi and eldritch horror is a good combination that Alien vs. Predator could never capture. It's quite something and it's very intriguing. Mr. Lovecraft has me hooked... Oct 27, 2014 Simon Another re-read for me. One of Lovecraft's finest stories that is perfectly paced and with a great build up and release of tension at the end. A meteor lands in a farmer's land in a rural backwater in New England. It has exceedingly strange properties that baffle scientists and gradually has a strange and insidious effect on the surrounding area. Definitely recommended for those new to Lovecraft, especially if you're already inclined to read SF. It was not a matter of old legendry at all, but something within the lifetime of those who spoke. It had happened in the ’eighties, and a family had disappeared or was killed. Speakers would not be exact; and because they all told me to pay no attention to old Ammi Pierce’s crazy tales, I sought him out the next morning, having heard that he lived alone in the ancient tottering cottage where the trees first begin to get very thick. To me this reads entirely as camp, and it's camp I love. (I have It was not a matter of old legendry at all, but something within the lifetime of those who spoke. (I have no doubt whatsoever that Lovecraft was deadly serious about it, though. I was going to plaster photo realistic rainbow fields and forests all over this review, but I will tip my hat to Lovecraft and refrain. The story is sufficiently horrifying in spite of its rainbows of disgusting vegetation. ) There's even an almost killer bunny. That said, Lovecraft's writing is awful and he's back to using characters as props to observe the horror as it unfolds rather than allowing them to do anything actual people would do when faced with a threat of this nature. (And the Darwin Award on this entry goes to the entire municipality of Arkham, or at least whoever is in charge of their water and sanitation departments. ) By rights this should be two stars, but it made me laugh. "The Colour Out of Space" is a prime piece of botanical horror, planting all of the discomforts there can be about things that arrive with the spring - water, mold, and flora. This is so far my favourite short story by Lovecraft, other than maybe "The Rats in the Walls", but the racial insensitivity in that story causes me to like it much less than this one. "The Colour Out of Space" regards a nameless man who looks into a strange piece of farmland that none of the locals will touch, nicknamed 'the blasted heath' for its rotting and burnt appearance. He discovers through talking with a local named Ammi Pearce, that the land's corruption began with a meteorite that crashed there, as well as something strange that settled in the farm's well, and investigates its history. Jun 06, 2017 Jerry Jose ‘The Blasted heath’ is a vacant, almost shunned deep wood valley by the West Hills of rural New England, a place no good for imagination with its withered vegetation and evasively muttered local legends. This novella, like atavistic Arkham mysteries, takes reader through the narrative of an unnamed outsider, in his quest to understand the queer happenings of Gardner Estate, following a meteorite fall. The monster or alien or other dimensional entity in this book, is a colour, or takes the form of ‘The Blasted heath’ is a vacant, almost shunned deep wood valley by the West Hills of rural New England, a place no good for imagination with its withered vegetation and evasively muttered local legends. The monster or alien or other dimensional entity in this book, is a colour, or takes the form of a colour, a colour unknown to us, and not of our cosmos. In Lovecraftian horror, the little details that are left out for reader’s imagination usually embellish the ones that form the premise. Considering the time of publication(1927), I was amazed at the metallurgical details author put on that other worldly meteorite - a soft, ductile non homogeneous shrinking mass completely in contradiction with every definition. Miskatonic University analysis of the specimen, is said to have concluded traces of 'Widmanstatten ferrite' in its texture along with strong 'silicon' affinity and other unfathomable properties. Interestingly enough, the iron ore content goes well with frequent lightening at crate and Silicon, the semiconductor material, could, though arguably, give some scientific side to the strange colours. And the effect of ‘colour’ and meteorite to the surroundings and inhabitants, though archaically, draws close parallelism with modern day nuclear holocaust. Seemingly prophesying HPL was keen to leave the ‘unknown factor’ in a rather clever manner with protagonist's outsider pov. Never are the readers credited with the authenticity of ‘strange days’, and Ammi Pierce, the sole inhabitant and spectator of the incident, for all we know is an unreliable narrator. Nevertheless, in all its openness and reticent narrative, The Colour out of Space had my preponderant attention buoyed up. Though it should have been the other way around, ‘the blasted heath’ and Gardner Estate constantly reminded me of Mirkwood from Stranger Things and Keyhouse from Locke and Key. And the strangest part was, as usual, me being more immersed in Howard’s word flow and writing, than the creeping alien horror this story is famous for... Aug 10, 2016 Rose This was my very first (and as of this date, only) H. Lovecraft I have ever read. Considering my reading history, you would have thought I would have at least a few of them under my belt by now but I was avoiding him. When I was fairly young, there was a show on TV that was about Lovecraft. I wasn't really watching that show but in those days there were only a couple of channels and I just happened to flip to it and watched a few minutes. I was freaked out. I was totally and completely turned This was my very first (and as of this date, only) H. I was totally and completely turned off of him and never forgot his name. Keep in mind, this was also around the same age that I ate a grilled cheese sandwich, got the flu and subsequently didn't eat another for 15 years. I'm glad I got over it because he was a good writer. Considering almost a century has passed, I didn't really find it to be overly dated. Thinking back on the story, I guess the alien was the colour itself (as implied by the title) but it really felt like we never got to see the actual alien. While reading, I was reminded of Roadside Picnic - you see the aftermath but never the alien that caused the problems. If you've been putting off Lovecraft, this may be a good one to start with. It was short but very good. I really enjoyed it... Very gripping and chilling and so descriptive. Would be interesting to see the movie adaptation that's about to come out. Really enjoyed the story. 5/5 Jul 14, 2013 Layton I've read somewhere that when Lovecraft set out to write The Colour Out of Space, he wanted to write about an alien entity, that was actually alien and unknown. Because Lovecraft realized that if you used the same caricature of a grey alien every time that you wrote an alien/UFO story it wasn't going to be scary at all. And besides, the word alien refers to something absolutely foreign and unknown, and after awhile being told something is alien, doesn't make it so. But Lovecraft did it. He I've read somewhere that when Lovecraft set out to write The Colour Out of Space, he wanted to write about an alien entity, that was actually alien and unknown. He created a terrifying entity that mere humans can't fully comprehend. And even the most beautiful visual attempts at portraying it don't truly do this creature justice. But then again, that's what makes it work. Here is the Goodreads description: The Colour Out of Space is a 1st-person narrative written from the perspective of an unnamed Boston surveyor. To prepare for the construction of a new Massachusetts reservoir, he surveys a rural area that's to be flooded near the fictional town of Arkham. He comes across a mysterious patch of land, an abandoned 5-acre farmstead completely devoid of life. At the centre of the farmstead is an old well. The site fills him with an unnatural sense of dread. He hurries past it. When he returns to Arkham, the surveyor asks around for information regarding the waste. He learns of an elderly hermit, Ammi Pierce, & asks him about the "blasted heath". The hermit tells him a horrific tale. In the early 1880s, the farm had been productive, run by a Nahum Gardner & his family. Then, one afternoon in 6/1882, a large meteorite crashed into the farm, beside the well. It was metallic & contained a substance of an indescribable color that proved toxic. While scientists were never able to tell what the meteor contained, its effects were undeniable--the entire Gardner family was struck by insanity, illness & worse, whilst the land around them was slowly drained of life. When it says it drove the family mad it really means it. By the end of Pierce's story every family member is dead, having been turned into horrific versions of their once normal selves. And the animals around the farm have been mutated, with the plant life having been mutated too. Truly horrific isn't it? And by the end of Pierce's story the horror comes to a head. I love this story, and it's actually my favorite Lovecraft story and has one of the best monsters I've ever read of. There is a reason Lovecraft, his own worst critic, loved it so much and thought it was his best story he'd ever written, you know? 5 stars to this beauty... I love horror. I've read much horror as a kid, book after book after book of delicious scary stories. Truth is, horror for the most part isn't scary at all. In literary form that is. When it comes to horror movies, I always chicken out or look away. It's just not my thing. Too gory, too explicit, too... obvious. Plus, adaptations are nearly always pretty meagre compared to their originals. But I'm not here to talk about movies vs books, the classic argument. I'm here to talk about my obsession I love horror. I'm here to talk about my obsession with Lovecraft. For a while now, I've been pondering on the question how Lovecraft's stories manage to penetrate so deeply into the mind. Today the thought struck me: the power of suggestion. So obvious! Stephen King one of my favorite horror authors, knows how to use the power of suggestion. However, he owes a lot of it to Lovecraft (one of his inspirations), who is the old master in the art. The colour out of space is no different in this respect. It starts much in the same fashion as some of his other tales I've read (at the mountains of madness) in that some bizarre event takes place, bad omens come forth, but the temptation of scoring the ultimate discovery trumps the mind's cautiousness. What follows, however, is so bizarre, so uncanny, so otherworldly, that somehow it races past the point of 'that's just ridiculous' to the point of 'but what if... '. That suspension of disbelief so typical of Lovecraft managed to pull me in seamlessly. I literally could not stop reading, despite my other urgent tasks, and that hasn't happened in... well, probably in years. I see symbolism everywhere: the grey vs the colour (the way Lovecraft describes it reminds me of overly saturated colours, the kind of which you see at fairs or during carnavals, those that seem to attack you from afar, the ugly-as-sin tones that catch your eye and you want to turn away but reluctantly aren't able too), death vs life (correspondingly with the above)... ok well maybe it's not so much the symbolism as it is the utterly derangedness of vision as described here... Maybe it's the bouts of insanity, maybe it's the obscure elements that aren't explained and prickle the mind even afterwards (the well Lovecraft, what about the well??!! ), in any case, Lovecraft has made a deep impression with this story that is not wont to leave me anytime soon. I don't know if I ought to be resentful or thankful for this feat since I am definitely not easily scared by horror stories. I guess I'll know when the blanket of night covers me and I can find out whether the trees do or do not start moving..... The cover art is reason enough to love this book! Lovecraft never wrote much more than shorts, of course, and all of us who make a living in the genre owe something to his great brief mind. Fortunately, this was the first book of Lovecraft's that I ever read and I was thoroughly introduced to the man's mind from the varied and astounding tales within. Lovecraft's weakness was "character" - and these stories are no exception. The characters each have ridiculous dialogue and forced behavior. Never The cover art is reason enough to love this book! Lovecraft never wrote much more than shorts, of course, and all of us who make a living in the genre owe something to his great brief mind. Never let this poison your view of Lovecraft's incredible imagination and meticulous gift of macabre. He was the master of the genre and in many ways still is. I cannot recommend this particular book enough, especially if you're just getting to know Howard Phillips and his incredible worlds... Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction. Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft's protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality. Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe. — Wikipedia.. “It was just a colour out of space—a frightful messenger from unformed realms of infinity beyond all Nature as we know it; from realms whose mere existence stuns the brain and numbs us with the black extra-cosmic gulfs it throws open before our frenzied eyes. ” — 24 likes “There was really nothing for serious men to do in cases of wild gossip, for superstitious rustics will say and believe anything. ” 18 likes More quotes… Welcome back. I remember reading this a long time ago and being surprised with just how much I enjoyed it. Great read. Unleashing a beam of light so maddening. This 2019 sci-fi/horror film stars Nicolas Cage and Joely Richardson based on H.P. Lovecraft's short story. This tells about a farmer, Nathan (Cage) who is trying to help his wife, Theresa (Richardson) who has cancer and their 3 children. Soon, a meteor lands on their property which has a blaring, pinkish hue that starts to affect everything as well as the family. This is a weird & disturbing flick sharing similar, body horror elements with "From Beyond. The Thing, Cage is over the top as usual, the score is ok and there's some pretty effects/scenery. You could give this a view if you're into sci-fi or horror, but once is enough for me.

I just watched it and it's absolutely beautifully insane. fantastic just fantastic. Big flash like a pink actually, I don't even know what color it wasn't like any color I had seen before... Ok. Can we kill this line in the film? If it's like a pink light, this unknowable color is certainly like a colour you have seen before. Proof readers, help. Color out of space audio. 32:00 Let me just go back in time. Color out of space trailer reaction. Thanks for the (very energetic, expressive) review! I'll still try to see it, even tho (to me) there are already a lot of things just from the preview alone that seem very off from the story, the tone and look of the number of reviews I've heard constantly talking about Cage going way over the top does not bode well in my mind. But I will support it just to see, hopefully, more HPL brought to the silver screen. I've read almost all of his stories (repeatedly) and know an awful lot about him and the mood he seemed so absolutely dedicated to creating, and so far, I haven't seen or heard a lot that convinces me this film has it. Again I am open to being proven wrong to myself. (Side note: There are scenes that take place in a poisoned farm in the drama DARK WATERS that come across closer to the earlier stages of the original Lovecraft story than what I've seen in the COLOR trailer, and for whatever were the real life horrors that people faced in DW, the characters are very realistically underplayed, even though they've been driven into the depths of dark anguish by an inexplicable poisonous taint that is destroying their farm. Their reactions seem all natural and believable, not overdone. I'd like to see a Lovecraft film handled more in that style than in a crazy/loony approach. Anyway, that's probably just me. Again, thanks.
