Overview Sally Benson's short stories about the turn-of-the-century Smith family of St. Louis were tackled by a battalion of MGM screenwriters, who hoped to find a throughline to connect the anecdotal tales. After several false starts (one of which proposed that the eldest Smith daughter be kidnapped and held for ransom) the result was the charming valentine-card musical Meet Me in St. Louis. The plot hinges on the possibility that Alonzo Smith (Leon Ames) the family's banker father, might uproot the Smiths to New York, scuttling his daughter Esther (Judy Garland) s romance with boy-next-door John Truett (Tom Drake) and causing similar emotional trauma for the rest of the household. In a cast that includes Mary Astor as Ames' wife, Lucille Bremer as another Ames daughter, and Marjorie Main as the housekeeper, the most fascinating character is played by 6-year-old Margaret O'Brien. As kid sister Tootie, O'Brien seems morbidly obsessed with death and murder, burying her dolls, killing" a neighbor at Halloween (she throws flour in the flustered man's face on a dare) and maniacally bludgeoning her snowmen when Papa announces his plans to move to New York. Margaret O'Brien won a special Oscar for her remarkable performance, prompting Lionel Barrymore to grumble "Two hundred years ago, she would have been burned at the stake. The songs are a heady combination of period tunes and newly minted numbers by Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin, the best of which are "The Boy Next Door. The Trolley Song. and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. As a bonus, Meet Me in St. Louis is lensed in rich Technicolor, shown to best advantage in the climactic scenes at the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904. Ah well, not like there's a sea of other content in my list i haven't watched. level 1 Streaming rights change from month to moth sometimes. Why I'm never getting rid of my physical collection. level 1 “Meet Me in St. Louis” was on the service, but I and others werent able to find it shortly after it was added, unless we used the search function. I was in the middle of watching it, but had to leave, and when I came back the next day, it wasnt listed in the collection list. Judy Garland Add to Custom List Add to My Collection AllMusic Rating 10 User Ratings ( 0) Your Rating Overview ↓ User Reviews Credits Releases Similar Albums As one of the premiere MGM musicals of all time, it is amazing that a definitive Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) had never been available prior to this 1995 single CD. Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin 's complete score is included, as are the oft-overlooked orchestrations from Conrad Salinger. Even though the role seems to have been written specifically for Judy Garland, the actress purportedly fought the studio, as she had grown weary of portraying children onscreen. As fate would have it, her performance not only stole the show, but became one of Garland 's most critically and commercially successful performances. The plot deals with the Smith family during the winter of 1903, as they eagerly await the opening of the World's Fair in their hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. However, when the father is offered a substantial job in the Big Apple, their hopes of attending the event are dashed. Simply put, Garland. who plays the second oldest female of five siblings. is splendid from tip to tail. Especially notable are her solos on the yearning "The Boy Next Door. the holiday standard "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. the career-defining "Trolley Song. and on this edition, an outtake titled "Boys and Girls Like You and Me. She is joined by Lucille Bremer on the familiar reprise of the theme "Meet Me in St. Louis" and on the high-energy square dance routine "Skip to My Lou. Tom Drake. the object of Garland 's affections in the film. pairs up for the poignant waltz ballad "Over the Banister. Although it tends to be eclipsed somewhat by the other luminous entries in the songbook, the vaudevillian "Under the Bamboo Tree" is a great production number with a very young Margaret O'Brien accompanying Garland. The liner notes are extensive, housing plenty of eye candy, as well as a detailed essay by George Feltenstein. blue highlight denotes track pick.
I'd seen this film several times as a child before studying it in earnest as part of a college film class. Now, nearly 20 years past, I look more at the nuances and subtleties of the performances and direction in a movie that seems easy to characterize as sentimental. Indeed, the vibrant color, the relatively simple plot contrivances, and the resolution of the big question of the movie all make for what seems superficially like a film for fans of Corny Musicals.
Let me argue against "sap" for the main reason that a deep undercurrent of real and heartfelt emotion underlies the entire enterprise. And the credit can be spread wide for that:
1. The rich and subtle performance of Judy Garland, who does not miss a step, a note, a glance or an inflection throughout the entire movie. For many la Judy can be an acquired taste, but she shows her "stuff" here. Watch her primping at the mirror with Rose, watching Tootie as she sings "Dear Mother, or in the scene where The Boy tells her he can't get his tuxedo out of the cleaners. She was a marvelous actor, and it shows in the small scenes as well as the grand singing ones. Her transition from worry and disappointment to exuberance in The Trolley Song is a wonder to behold.
2. Margaret O'Brien as Tootie (and also the writer's characterization of Tootie) here is a child who is not "nice" or "cute" the way TV/Movie kids are today. But she is compelling and wonderful in own right - a real flesh and blood kid. In particular the Halloween scene really shows the dark side of childhood where scary fantasies can become real, and the depths of her despair at leaving St. Louis capture the essence of leaving everything that is familiar and right.
3. The acting company is so wonderful from the smallest supporting actor to the largest role, there is a give and take (note the "passing" of the title song from person to person at the beginning of the film) and the easy banter, the dinner table interactions, the scene where everyone finds out about the Big Move, and you get a sense that this is a real family.
4. The integration and the transition from the emotion of the scene directly into the emotion of the song, and then back to the scene is repeated again and again. This is not an easy thing to do, and for all I can recall, Minnelli was the first to master it. Most musicals would stop dead in the their tracks to do a song, but the music here is so organic and truthful you hardly notice the strings moving in the background.
5. And don't get me started on the score, which is really wonderful, echoing the various themes at just the perfect moment. The Halloween bonfire music is especially good. I think credit goes to George Stoll for that.
6. And for putting the package together, a tip of the hat to Vincente Minnelli and Arthur Freed, who went on to do many wonderful musicals, but none perhaps as wonderful as this one. Minnelli works magic with staging (the "Skip to My Lou" and "Trolley Song" are wonderful group numbers) and it must have been true love that helped Judy Garland's wonderful performance.
This is my next favorite after Officer Krupke. I always loved this version of the song, because we get the hear Bernardo sing and it's fun to watch the teasing between the guys and gals.

Dan Truhitte is the actor who played Rolf in this movie. He was also my voice teacher throughout high school(he now lives in NC) and he changed my life for the better! He even sang 16 Going on 17 to me when I turned 16. He's a wonderful man and I owe him so much for helping me find confidence as a singer and as a person. ❤️ Last I heard, he's still teaching voice lessons, and that makes me so happy.

Also just want to point out that compassion is taught by your family from a young age. So many variables in these experiments for example... are all these students rich kids anyway?
